Karen Swift Valley Transportation - Guest Speaker May 8
Are you tired of all those cars choking every street in Sherman Oaks every morning? There are 800,000 daily car trips between the Valley & West LA. Every one of those cars goes through Sherman Oaks. Do you want public transportation through the Sepulveda Pass to start soon? Prop M was passed last November. Several Valley projects were funded by the Prop M increase in your taxes; including the Sepulveda Pass, and a train on a part of the Orange Line. Ms Swift will update us on the progress and how our tax dollars are being spent. For the complete agenda go to www.shermanoaksnc.org.

New Police Chief
LAPD has a new Deputy Chief in charge of the Valley. We are glad to have Deputy Chief John Sherman in our community. Put this URL in your browser address line to see his opening message https://social.newsinc.com/media/json/69017/32256497/singleVideoOG.html?type=VideoPlayer/Single&widgetId=2&trackingGroup=69017&videoId=32256497 . He will be at an SONC meeting in the near future. Read the SONC Newsletter to find out when.

Movies Under the Stars
SONC is planning Movies Under the Stars again for this summer. Last year’s showings were outstanding and we’re planning even more for this year. Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Park will be the place to bring your family for a picnic and fun evening. Saturday, June 24 will be the first family movie night. Mark your calendar. We’re keeping the title secret for now. Read our June newsletter for the exciting title.

May 16 Election
There is a city election Tuesday, May 16. The city is in need of poll workers in the Valley. This is a fun one day job, helping your friends and neighbors. There is a need near you. Call (888) 873-1000, option “0”. Also be sure to vote.

SONC and Shelter Dogs
SONC just completed the purchase of $1,500 worth of dog beds for the East Valley Shelter. The dogs had been sleeping on the cold concrete floor while waiting to be adopted. These beds provide comfort for the canines during their stay. Yet are durable enough to be cleaned and sanitized for each new dog that checks in. The East Valley has lots of wonderful animals just waiting to join a family in a good home. Why not adopt one today? It’s Located at 14409 Vanowen, 1 block east of Van Nuys Blvd., open 8AM to 5PM Tues-Sat, 11AM to 5PM Sunday, closed Monday.

SONC Around the World!
SONC is known 'around the world! We received a contact from Japan this month. A researcher there is doing a study of American music in the 1960's and 1970's. He is looking for any information on Leon Russell, who lived, played, and recorded in Sherman Oaks at the time. Did you know Russell? Did he live near you? What can you tell us about him? Send us any detail no matter how small and we will forward it to Nick Katani in Japan.

Potholes
In February SONC worked with the Department of Street Services to get more than 100 potholes filled. Our next pothole filling event will be this summer. We need your help to locate and map areas that need repair now. We can get twice as many potholes filled if crews can go directly to them; so EXACT information is needed.

This is what we need to know:
  1. If it's in the street, we need the EXACT street address it's in front of (not just the block).
  2. If it's in an alley, we need the EXACT address it's behind plus the two streets at the ends of the alley.
  3. If it's in an intersection, we need the two streets that cross.
SAVE THE DATE -- Thursday August 17th STATE OF SHERMAN OAKS LUNCHEON with Congressman Brad Sherman, CA State Senator Robert Hertzberg, CA State Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian and LA CIty Councilmember David Ryu. 11;30 to 1:30 location to be determined.
